This purpose of this blog is to compile information relating to the death of cyclist Christoper Lecanne, 44 years old from South Miami, on Sunday, January 17, 2009.
Lecanne was cycling on the eastbound bike lane on Bear Cut Bridge. Carlos Bertonatti, a 28-year-old who lives on Key Biscayne, was, according to witnesses, driving at a high rate of speed and crashed into Lecanne.
The impact of the crash caved in the windshield of Bertonatti's car and dented the hood. Simultaneously, Lecanne's bicycle got trapped under the car.
Lecanne was attended to by fellow cyclists, one of whom was a paramedic. 5 minutes after the crash, police arrived at the scene to direct traffic and administer aid using a hand-operated respirator. Paramedics did not arrive until approximately 20 minutes after the crash was reported. Lecanne was eventually brought to the hospital but was pronounced dead.
Bertonatti did not stop and sped, with police chasing, almost 4 miles past Crandon Park and through the Village of Key Biscayne. Witnesses in Key Biscayne heard the bicycle scraping on the ground under the car and saw Bertonatti speed through red lights. The bike eventually became dislodged and Bertonatti was apprehended outside of his apartment building.
